PV1-8 in HL7 v2: A Field Guide to Referring Doctor
PV1-8 only carries meaningful data when a visit actually originated from a referral, which means it is empty in the large majority of PV1 segments — and code that assumes it is always populated tends to fail quietly rather than loudly.
PV1-8 is the eighth field of the PV1 segment — a composite (XCN data type) identifying the physician who referred the patient for this visit, when applicable.
What this field contains
Example
The 8th field (667788^JONES^MARY^E^^MD) shows Dr. Mary E. Jones as the referring physician. Synthetic patient — not a real person.
Where this trips people up
Referral-tracking and marketing-attribution reports built on top of PV1-8 often assume a missing value means "no referral," when in practice it can just as easily mean the sending system never captures referral data for that visit type. Testing with only fully populated examples hides this distinction until a report goes live and referral volume looks artificially low for entire service lines.
