Because PV1-10 codes are defined per facility rather than by the HL7 standard itself, a multi-hospital system that consolidates feeds from several source systems will often find the same three-letter code means different services at different sites — or that one site uses OB where another uses OBS. Census and staffing reports built against a single facility's code list quietly misclassify visits the moment a second facility is onboarded.
