Understanding X12 835 SVC05: Units of Service Paid Count in Practice
A payer can agree with your procedure code and still disagree with your unit count — SVC05 is where that disagreement gets recorded.
SVC05 is the Units of Service Paid Count: the number of units of the service on this line that the payer is actually paying for. It frequently equals the number of units the provider billed, but when a payer reduces units — say, paying for 1 unit of a service billed at 2 — SVC05 reflects the payer's number, and the originally billed unit count is preserved separately in SVC07 when applicable.

Where this trips people up
Generators and parsers alike tend to treat SVC05 as a fixed value of 1 because that is true for the vast majority of office-visit style lines, then break the first time a multi-unit line — physical therapy in 15-minute increments, or a drug billed per milligram — shows up with SVC05 greater than 1 or with a fractional value. Test data needs multi-unit and fractional-unit lines specifically, not just single-unit visits, to exercise that math correctly.
