X12 270/271 N401 Field Guide: City Name Values and Common Mistakes
N401 is plain free text, but plenty of intake systems treat it as if it came from a fixed, pre-validated list of city names — and that mismatch is where a perfectly legitimate small-town address starts getting flagged as suspicious.
N401 is the first element of the N4 segment in an X12 271 response — a free-form field that carries the city name for the address described by the preceding N3 segment.

N401 = Bellhaven, the city name paired with the state code and postal code that follow it. Synthetic 271 response data.
Where this trips people up
Test suites built against a handful of major-city examples rarely include unincorporated communities, hyphenated town names, or cities that share a name with a different city in another state. A validation layer that cross-checks N401 against a curated city list ends up rejecting real addresses that simply weren't in the sample data used to build that list, which is a self-inflicted failure the segment itself never required.
